Netizens thrilled after China unblocks IMDB movie database

China’s movie fans were thrilled after finding out on Wednesday that popular movie website IMDB (Internet Movie Database) had been unblocked by censors - an unexpected move many consider a signal that more changes are coming.

Unavailable in China since January 2010, the IMDB site’s return as been welcomed by Sina Weibo bloggers, who have thanked leaders of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) holding their annual legislative meetings in Beijing.

(Importantly, website availability reflects the IMDB’s commercial importance to the US entertainment industry that is likely to assist Chinese film companies in their increasingly profitable export of Chinese cultural products abroad, and also assist investment in China by providing current and future foreign joint ventures partners a further means of establishing market information, ed.)
